Codelco and SQM start their lithium joint venture in the Atacama
NovaAndino Litio, which takes over SQM’s operations in the Salar de Atacama, held its first board meeting. Under the agreed model the Chilean state will receive up to 70% of the operating margin on new production from 2025 to 2030, and up to 85% from 2031. Codelco chairs the board and SQM’s chief executive is vice-chair.

Why it matters. When the state owns the resource, a private operator may have to give up control and most of the margin to keep access to it.
